The nightmare continues during the winter of 1980 when the Ripper murders his 13th victim and the whole of Yorkshire is terrorised. Assistant Chief Constable Hunter struggles to solve the hellish crimes and bring an end to the horror, but is drawn ever deeper into a world of bent coppers and sleaze. After his house is burned down, his wife is threatened and his colleagues turn against him, Hunter’s quest becomes personal, as he has nothing left to lose. Nineteen Eighty is a compelling battle between two desperate men, each determined to destroy the other. The complete ´´box set´´ of T. H. White´s epic fantasy novel of the Arthurian legend. The novel is made up of five parts: ´´The Sword in the Stone´´, ´´The Witch in the Wood´´, ´´The Ill-Made Knight´´, ´´The Candle in the Wind´´, and ´´The Book of Merlyn´´. Merlyn instructs the Wart (Arthur) and his brother, Sir Kay, in the ways of the world. One of them will need it: the king has died, leaving no heir, and a rightful one must be found by pulling a sword from an anvil resting on a stone. In the second and third parts of the novel, Arthur has become king and the kingdom is threatened from the north. In the final two books, the ageing king faces his greatest challenge, when his own son threatens to overthrow him. In ´´The Book of Merlyn´´, Arthur´s tutor Merlyn reappears and teaches him that, even in the face of apparent ruin, there is hope. An intoxicating and transcendent debut novel that follows a critic, an artist, and their shared muse as they find their way - and ultimately collide - amid the ever-evolving New York City art scene of the 1980s. Welcome to SoHo at the onset of the ´80s: a gritty, quickly gentrifying playground for artists and writers looking to make it in the big city. Among them: James Bennett, a synesthetic art critic for The New York Times whose unlikely condition enables him to describe art in profound, magical ways; and Raul Engales, an exiled Argentinian painter running from his past and the Dirty War that has enveloped his country. As the two men ascend in the downtown arts scene, dual tragedies strike, and each is faced with a loss that acutely affects his relationship to life and to art. It is not until they are inadvertently brought together by Lucy Olliason - a small-town beauty and Raul´s muse - and a young orphan boy sent mysteriously from Buenos Aires that James and Raul are able to rediscover some semblance of what they´ve lost. As inventive as Jennifer Egan´s A Visit from the Goon Squad and as sweeping as Meg Wolitzer´s The Interestings, Tuesday Nights in 1980boldly renders a complex moment when the meaning and nature of art is being all but upended, and New York City as a whole is reinventing itself. In risk-taking prose that is as powerful as it is playful, Molly Prentiss deftly explores the need for beauty, community, creation, and love in an ever-changing urban landscape. 1. Language: English. The second volume of Michael Palin´s diaries covers the 1980s, a decade in which the ties that bound the Pythons loosened as they forged their separate careers. After a live performance at the Hollywood Bowl, they made their last performance together in 1983 in the hugely successful Monty Python´s Meaning of Life. Writing and acting in films and television then took over much of Michael´s life, culminating in the smash hit A Fish Called Wanda, in which he played the hapless, stuttering Ken (for which he won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor), and the first of his seven celebrated television journeys for the BBC. He wrote much of the dialogue and acted in Terry Gilliam´s Time Bandits and acted in his next film, Brazil. He co-produced, wrote and played the lead in The Missionary opposite Maggie Smith, who also appeared with him in A Private Function, written by Alan Bennett. For television he wrote East of Ipswich, inspired by his links with Suffolk. With Terry Jones he updated an earlier volume modestly retitled Dr Flegg´s Encyclopaedia of All World Knowledge. His family remains a constant as his and Helen´s children enter their teens. The decade - and this volume - ends with the hugely successful Around the World in 80 Days, which sees the start of a new career. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Palin. In 1979, the British team was in training for the following year´s Olympics when Russia invaded Afghanistan. President Carter, backed by Margaret Thatcher, urged athletes to boycott the event, and the worlds of politics and sport seemed caught in a deadlock. This fascinating programme sees Sue MacGregor reuniting members of the British Olympic team as they recall that controversial year. Duncan Goodhew, Joslyn Hoyte-Smith, and Colin Moynihan faced personal dilemmas about competing in the face of political opposition. Team leader Dick Palmer carried the flag alone into the Olympic stadium, and as the hate mail stacked up coach Frank Dick did his best to shield the athletes from the pressures. 1. Language: English. He was the son of an alcoholic shoe salesman. She was the adopted daughter fo a wealthy doctor. Both Ronald Reagan and Nancy Davis learned the value of cultivating the right friendships when they were young. Ronnie found his first marriage and political ambitions at irreconcilable odds, but when he met Nancy, one of the most remarkable career-building and romantic partnerships of all time was born. Now comes the definitive portrait of America´s First Couple, in an audiobook that is at once a political saga, a social history, and an unforgettable love story. No one is better equipped to chronicle the Reagans´ remarkable journey than noted journalist and longtime Vanity Fair writer Bob Colacello. With unprecedented access to Nancy Reagan, her personal papers, and the couple´s closest friends (including many who have spoken on the record for the first time) he sheds light on the Reagans´ early years and the development of the future president´s political ideas. Delving into their Hollywood careers, including Ronald Reagan´s marriage to actress Jane Wyman, he reveals how the Reagans perfected their social skills into an art form, rising through fashionable Los Angeles society to the governor´s mansion in Sacramento in 1967 and to the front door of the White House in 1980. Behind them, helping them climb from one peak to the next, was the Group, a clique of wealthy men and glamorous wives that would wield tremendous power throughout Ronald Reagan´s political life. Moving, uncompromisingly honest, and rich with details previously hidden from public view, Ronnie & Nancy reveals the dynamics of an extraordinary marriage and reflects upon its amazing impact not only on American society but also on the cause of freedom around the world. 1.
